IIM Indore giant leap to make Deoria a growth model

LUCKNOW: In a first-of-its-kind move, a top B-school has undertaken the task to develop a whole district in India. IIM-Indore has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with district magistrate, Deoria, on Friday to hammer out the blueprint for development of the district.

The institute has decided to assist district officials with its expansion and marketing of indigenous products, developing better allocation and implementation of state and Central government schemes along with management of traffic, civil and health departments.

Giving details about the unique pact, IIM-Indore director, Himanshu Rai told TOI that his ancestral village, Kataura, is in Deoria and it was payback time for him. Rai said there are two parts of the MoU which include development of the district and the second will be to develop Kataura as a model village . The parameters include improving its connectivity with adjoining areas, better infrastructure, development of schools and improving health facilities.

“We decided to figure out ways to promote the hand-weaved jewellery sector of district under one-district-one product (ODOP) government plan. We will devise ways to promote it on online platforms like Amazon, Flipkart. We will also train administrative officials on allocation of funds and implementing government schemes of state and Centre in the district,” said Rai.

Elaborating on plan of action, Rai said NCC cadets would be roped in to create awareness on traffic rules and they would also man crossings.

Administrative officials along with other department officials will be trained by IIM experts on a weekly basis on administration and management. District Magistrate, Deoria, Amit Kishore told TOI the move would not help in overall development of the district, but also initiate growth of the surrounding areas.
