Illegal land filling: Mapusa Cong seeks action, warns of protests

Saligao: The North Goa district Congress has threatened action against the alleged illegal land filling at Gaunsavaddo in Mapusa which has blocked an old water channel and one nullah which drains into the Mapusa river.

Congress members on Thursday met deputy collector Akshay Potekar and demanded that appropriate action be taken.

They warned that they would come out in protest if the authorities failed to act.

The party had written to Potekar demanding an inquiry into the illegality. Mapusa Municipal Council chief officer Clen Madeira had also written to Potekar demanding action against those involved.

Party spokesperson Tulio D’Souza said that despite several complaints to the PWD and the WRD, no measures had been taken to prevent the land-filling activity. “We have no option but to come on the roads and protest,” he said.

“With the monsoon approaching, the blocking of water channels could result in flooding,” North Goa Congress general secretary Bola Ghadi said. He also alleged that the land-filling has damaged the mangroves there.
