Jharsuguda: Installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS) is underway at the Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Odisha’s Jharsuguda to facilitate take-off and landing of aircrafts during inclement weather conditions, informed Sudesh Kumar Chauhan, director of the airport.

“The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is augmenting advanced navigational aids namely Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will cost Rs 3-4 crore.

A team from Corporate Headquarters of AAI visited Jharsuguda Airport last month for site survey for ILS. On commissioning of the ILS system, the minima visibility requirement of flights will be further reduced,” he said.

Doppler Very high frequency Omnidirectional Range (DVOR) colocated with DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) was installed at the Jharsuguda Airport in February, this year. These equipments are already calibrated both for ground and air last month by Flight Inspection Unit of AAI, which will be used by the aircraft to find out the radial and distance from the airport.

Visibility minima will be reduced upto 3-3.5 km after commissioning of these equipments which costed over Rs 6.30 crore. The present visibility minima is 5 km at the airport.
