IMC chief to help East Delhi civic body treat Ghazipur landfill waste

Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation commissioner Asheesh Singh has outlined a plan to assist East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) in treating ‘legacy waste’ of Ghazipur landfill.

“We are happy to accept the invite. It would be a major contribution from IMC to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and we are happy to contribute to building a Swachhscape across the nation.

We have decided to visit Ghazipur dumpsite and prepare a viable plan to help them clear legacy waste,” Singh told TOI

This plan comes following an invite from East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir to hold a knowledge sharing session for EDMC officials recently. Two women residents of East Delhi had urged him to clear the Ghazipur landfill, where one of their suggestions was to invite the IMC chief to help EDMC clear legacy waste from dumpsite. National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also instructed EDMC to start treating old dump before October 1. Singh has been credited for clearing over 13 lakh metric tonne of legacy waste from Indore’s 100-acre garbage dumpsite in Devguradia in just six months.

As many as three dumpsites are in Delhi, which have over 1.5 crore metric tonne of old dump. Of this, over 1 crore metric tonne of legacy waste lies at Ghazipur landfill.

Civic body under Singh has been able to clear 13 lakh metric tonne of old dump through a bio-remediation.

Civic body officials said that it would take at least three years even if the same process is adopted by EDMC since the amount of old waste is almost 15 times at Ghazipur landfill site as compared to what was in Indore. Its garbage mountain is measured to be over 65m high and is spread over 29 acre. The treatment is estimated to cost over Rs250crore.
