IMD issues Orange alert for four districts in Kerala, Yellow for 10

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for six districts of Kerala in wake of the current weather formation over the Arabian Sea. A ‘Yellow’ alert is basically a call for action for state and central administrations.

The Yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts for Wednesday.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram districts have been issued an Orange alert.

The weather department has also issued ‘Orange’ and ‘Yellow’ alerts for several other districts in Kerala following ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ across the coastal state in southern India.

The ‘Orange’ alert has been issued in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts for Thursday. The ‘Yellow’ alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod districts for tomorrow.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds lashed Kerala’s state capital of Thiruvananthapuram today, the reason why the India Meteorological Department issued a ‘Yellow’ alert in the district.

Apart from Thiruvananthapuram, certain areas over Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have also been put on alert following incessant rainfall on Wednesday. The weather agency further forecasts heavy rainfalls over Karaikal and Mahe.

“Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana and Coastal and South Interior Karnataka,” the IMD said in its weather bulletin.

The IMD also advised fishermen not to venture into the seas in the aforementioned areas in the next couple of days. The weather department issued an alert about Cyclone KYARR and said the extremely severe cyclonic storm has moved north-northwestwards tailing with a wind speed of 4 kmph over the past six hours.
