IMD issues yellow alert for many areas in Kerala next week

KOCHI: The weather department has said that there will be increase in rainfall with some places experiencing above normal rainfall next week as a low-pressure area is likely to form over north Bay of Bengal by August 4. Following this, IMD has issued a yellow alert (isolated heavy rain of 7-11cm) in many parts of the state.




Extended-range forecast says that Kerala will receive above normal rainfall in central and northern parts in coming weeks, though there is low probability of formation of a depression in the region.


Coastal regions are on full alert as winds, with speeds of 50-60km/hr, are expected to hit the coast in the next couple of days. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 km/hr is likely along Kerala’s coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture out for fishing. High waves – in the range of 1.8- 3.3m –are forecast along the coast from Pozhiyoor to Kasaragod. Surface current speeds may vary between 46-67cm/sec.

According to weekly rainfall data received last week, there was a 42% deficiency from July 22-29 with only three district receiving excess rain. Now, rainfall deficiency stands at 23% from Jun 1- Jul 31with six districts receiving normal rain and eight experiencing deficiency. Largest deficiency of 58% was reported in Wayanad followed by Idukki (44%) and Thrissur (39%). On Friday, Kudlu in Kasaragod received 8cm rain. Chalakudy, Kodungallur and Hosdurg received 5cm each while Cherthala, Vaikom, Taliparamba, received 4cm each. Cial, Kannur, Kollam, Kayamkulam and Kumarakom recorded 3cm of rain.
