IMD says low-pressure area over Arabian Sea to intensify into Depression; orange alert for Kerala's Idukki

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Friday, said that the low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea may concentrate into a depression over the next 24 hours and is likely to intensify even further. Further, the Met department also issued an orange alert for Idukki district in Kerala.

The district is likely to receive isolated spells of 'heavy to very heavy rains' over May 29 and 30, an IMD update said on Friday.

The southern state is already expected to receive first spells of monsoon on June 1. Most of the other districts in Kerala are expected to receive low, medium and heavy rainfall over the next few days.

"The Well Marked Low-Pressure area lies over West Central Arabian Sea with associated cyclonic circulation. It is
very likely to concentrate into a depression over the same region during the next 24 hrs and likely to intensify further thereafter," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

Thunderstorm in Gurugram, a downpour in parts of Delhi likely today

Meanwhile, the weatherman has also predicted thunderstorm with light rain in the areas of Gurugram, Palwal, Hathras, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mujjafarnagar, Khatauli, Bijnor, Jhajjar, Kharkhoda, and Nazibabad on Friday. Areas of the south, south-west and north-west Delhi are also slated to experience a downpour.

Anand Sharma, Deputy Director-General, IMD said that 'due to the prevalence of western disturbance over the Himalayan region, the northwestern parts of the country would have temperatures less than 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days'. The change is weather may come as a respite to the north Indian region which has been witnessing a severe heatwave over the past few days.

"Heatwave has disappeared from the Northwest part of India. The temperature has come down and for the next 3 to 4 days, it is going to remain below 40 degrees Celsius. After a couple of days, there would be a slight increase in temperature. In May-end we would have pleasant weather," Sharma said.

"We have said that monsoon will hit Kerala on 1st June, it's a good sign. The first week is going to be good for the west coast especially up to Maharashtra," he further added.
