In 18 months, 2,814 arrested for peddling in Bathinda range

Bathinda: Bathinda range comprising Bathinda, Mansa and Muktsar districts disposed of record 11,046 cases in less than 18 months from April 1, 2018, to September 10 this year. Earlier the rate of disposing of cases in the police range was nearly 5,000 cases per year.

Out of these, 8,830 cases were sent to courts for various types of trials, 1,205 were termed as untraceable, and 1,011 cases were cancelled for various reasons.

During these 18 months, 225 proclaimed offenders were arrested from the range, which include 113 in Bathinda police district, 53 in Mansa and 59 in Muktsar.

Outgoing inspector general of police (IG) Bathinda range M F Farooqui on Thursday said that during this period thrust of the police remained on controlling drug abuse apart from curbing crime as 2,007 cases were registered in Bathinda Range under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act wherein 2,814 persons were arrested. The police recovered 107kg of opium, 5,033kg poppy husk, 42.98 lakh habit-forming pills, 11,809 injections, 120kg ganja, 12kg bhang, 11.5kg heroin, 4.55kg charas, 288g smack, 334g intoxicating powder, 1.1 litres narcotic liquid and 4,377 syrup bottles.

It is during this period that Bathinda Civil Lines police station was turned into model police station, which bagged the award for peoples’ police station from Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for best practices in smart policing. There is plan to make four more as model police stations, said Farooqui, who was flanked by Bathinda SSP Nanak Singh.
