In 3 days, Gurgaon reported more corona cases than it did in 2 months

Gurgaon: With 157 fresh Covid-19 cases reported on Saturday, Gurgaon went straight past the 600-mark and almost close to the 700-mark in one day. It has 677 cases now, about 450 of which are active.

The sharp rise marks two differences — more cases have come in a very short span of time and the newer cases have been spread out across the city.

The city’s first 100 cases came over 50 days since March 16. Then in May, the rate sped up. The next 100 came in 11 days — this was the time 17 cases were traced to the Azadpur mandi cluster. Going past the 300-mark took just 10 days. But May 28 was the inflection point — the city added 68 cases that day to go past 400 cases, another 115 were reported the following day and, finally, in the biggest daily surge , 157 cases were reported on Saturday. That’s 340 cases in three days — more than the total number of cases reported till May 27.

In terms of geographical spread, cases in Gurgaon had been restricted to a few urban clusters till May 26 — Dundahera, Sirhaul, Sector 10, Kapashera , Mullahera and the ones traced to Azadpur mandi in Delhi.

Now, the cases are spread out. If areas with more than five cases are taken into account, Gurgaon has at least 17 clusters that alone have 186 cases. They are scattered across the city —from DLF 1 to 4 and Chakkarpur on the western periphery to Bhim Nagar and Pratap Nagar on the east, all the way down to Manesar to the south and Dundahera and New Palam Vihar to the north, among others. And all the cases were reported over the past three days.

Besides, there are more than 20 areas with one case each, 15 sectors with two cases each and 14 new areas with five cases each.

The health department, however, maintained the situation is “in control” in Gurgaon. “Most of our cases are asymptomatic , so they only require isolation. We have very few critical cases. There is no need to panic,” a health official said.
