In fight against drugs, Barnala police fall back on volleyball

BARNALA: To keep youngsters away from drugs , police here are organizing a volleyball tournament . The tournament, comprising six teams divided into two groups, began on Monday evening.


The winners will take home a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and the runners-up will be given Rs 10,000.

Teams from Bhaini Jassa, Badbar and Pakho Kalan villages are in Pool A and Rureke Kalan, Dhanaula and Kubbe are in Pool B.

The winners from the two groups will clash in the final on Sunday.

Singh said the tournament was the police’s attempt to engage youngsters in constructive activities and provide them opportunities to showcase their skills. “Sports came to our mind naturally and we decided to organize volleyball and football leagues in villages. The volleyball league has been started, and the football will be held next month. We are getting good response, some are even coming forward to play barefeet. I have spotted youngsters who have the potential to excel at the highest level and they will be sent to a volleyball coaching academy,” he said.

Volleyball player Iqbal Singh of Badbar said, “More such initiatives are needed to pull youth out of the drug menace.”
