In Jind, Narwana, sanitation workers conduct MC's BPL survey

JIND: Both Jind and Narwana municipal councils (MC) had carried out a survey by the Class IV employees, such as tractor drivers, peons, gardeners, watchmen and sanitation workers, to identify urban below poverty line (BPL) people.

A letter was issued by municipal council on June 11, the copy of which is available with TOI.

It reads that according to the order of urban local bodies’ department in Chandigarh, these employees are deputed for the BPL survey.

Talking to TOI, Hansraj, chairman of Narwana municipal council, who maintained that the work was done without consulting with him, said it was unfortunate that Class IV employees were deputed the work. “The secretary didn’t share any details regarding the survey with me,” he added.

He insisted that such surveys are the responsibility of respective ward councillors.

When contacted, Saurabh Sharma, a gardener-cum-watchman in Jind MC, said he had carried out the survey and submitted his report in the office as his boss told him to.

Deputy commissioner Aditya Dahiya said when matter was brought to his notice, he took appropriate steps. “I have directed officials concerned to immediately stop deputing Class IV employees for such tasks,” he added.
