'Isro will try again to land on Moon'

TRICHY: The Indian Space Research organisation (Isro) will try again to land on the Moon , says Isro chairman K Sivan in a letter he has sent to a section of students at a panchayat union school in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu .

Eight students of the Panchayat Union Middle School at Avanathankottai West in Aranthangi wrote separate letters to Sivan in September after seeing visuals of him breaking down when Chandrayaan -2 lander lost communication with Isro ground station.

In his reply to the students, Sivan expressed his happiness about them watching the Chandrayaan -2 mission. He said the Chandrayaan lander could not land successfully on the Moon, but the orbiter is functioning effectively. The orbiter will send scientific details for seven years even after its mission life of one year.

“We will work again to land on the Moon,” he wrote in his letter dated November 4 which reached the school on Saturday.

Wishing the students all success in life, Sivan said Isro would achieve greater heights with the support and wishes of children like them.

K Shalini, a Class VIII student, had written to Sivan saying that his life had inspired her since he reached such heights after studying like her in a government school. But it was heart-breaking to see him breaking down, she wrote. She had expressed hope that Isro would soon be able to connect to the lander.

Headmistress of the school P Kalaiselvi told TOI that they had never expected a reply. The letter was read out in the assembly on Saturday.

They have decided to frame the letter and display it along with the medals and certificates the school has got.
