ITBP, Army shine at Auli winter games

DEHRADUN: The three-day National Nordic and Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding competition held at Auli concluded on Thursday with ITBP and Army bagging most of the medals. More than 150 athletes from five teams participated in the games.


While Tuesday and Wednesday had seen professional players from states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal and Delhi as well as ITBP and Army jawans showcasing their skills on the snow slopes, local youth participated in the senior and junior level of the open championship on Thursday.



On the first day of the competition, events like 1100m super joint slam snow race and cross-country 15 km skiing were organised. Devendra Gurung of the Army won the first gold in the race, clocking at 55.66 seconds followed by Heera Lal of Himachal Pradesh . Among the women contenders, gold was won by Sandhya followed by Achal and Varsha at second and third places respectively. All the three players belonged to Himachal Pradesh. In the cross-country event, Man Bahadur Gurung of the army won the first prize while Babita of the ITBP won gold in the women’s event.

On Wednesday, ITBP’s Atul Bhatt won gold in joint slam while Army’s Aziz and Sunil Kumar got silver and bronze medal respectively. In the women’s event, all the three medals were won by Himachal Pradesh while Anchal Thakur got the gold medal, Sandhya Thakur bagged silver and Varsha Thakur won the bronze medal.

The award for the best skiers went to ITBP’s Atul Bhatt and Sandhya Thakur of Himachal Pradesh.
