Jaipur: 50,000 street dogs lead to survival conflicts, says report

JAIPUR: A three-member committee on dog menace constituted by the Jaipur district collector has presented its recommendations. The report highlights survival conflicts between dogs and between humans and dogs in the city.

The report which is in possession with TOI shows that presence of 50,000 street dogs has been confirmed in the city and that there is intense fight for survival among dogs as well as among humans and the canines.

“The population of dogs with diseases and disabilities is in abundance in the city which leads to dog-human conflict,” the report pointed out. It was prepared by the committee comprising two government veterinary doctors and one health department officer.

Moreover, the committee also listed dogs in the city as one of the major causes for road accidents.

The report confirms that dogs are attacking children. “About 8,000 dog bite cases have been reported in the city between January and September 2019,” says the report.

The committee has recommended setting up of dog rehabilitation centres at five places— Ajmer Road, Tonk Road, Delhi Road, Agra Road and Sikar Road for their sterilisation and birth control with an objective to control dog population by animal birth control programme, treatment and care of diseases and disabled dogs, isolation of abusive and rabies suspected dogs, proper disposal of dog carcass, immunisation of dog population in the city, extensive activity regarding dog behaviour and caring of pet and street dog and adoption of healthy dogs by NGOs and people.

With the project, the committee expects that human dog bite cases will reduce, accidents due to dog movement will also minimise, deadly diseases like rabies can be controlled and eliminated, treatment cost, vaccination and health infrastructure will be drastically reduced and human misery too will be alleviated.

“In the city, there are 50,000 street dogs. The sterilisation of dogs for their population control is a must. It should be done at a rapid pace. For the purpose, there should be outsourcing of sterilisation work of dogs for giving pace to it,” Jagroop Singh Yadav, district collector told TOI. Recently, an eight-year-old boy died after suffering serious injuries sustained in dog attack.
