Jaipur: Five lakh visit Govind Devji temple on Janmashtami

JAIPUR: Over 5 lakh devotees thronged Govind Devji temple in Jaipur on Saturday as the city celebrated Janmashtami , a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna , the eighth avatar of Vishnu.

"The Abhishek (conducted by priests by pouring libations on the image of the deity being worshipped, amidst the chanting of mantras) of Lord Krishna was held at 12 midnight (Sunday).

At the time of Abhishek, a 21-gun salute was given to the God where the members of the royal family were also present,” said a devotee Roopsur Goyal, who was present at the temple.

“In all, 415 litres of milk, 11 kg of honey, yogurt, ghee, sandalwood paste were poured as a part of offerings on the Lord during the ceremony. The prasad was offered to members of the royal family and devotees after the Abhishek,” he added.

As the performances of the local shehnai players rent the air, the Hari Bhajans created a mood of devotion at the temple. Sagari laddus (made of milk and flour) were distributed to all the devotees for free. Many brought their kids to the temple dressing them up like Lord Krishna and Radha . People also bought new clothes, crowns, peacock feathers and Jhulas ( hammock ) for Lord krishna from the shops outside the temple.
