Jammu and Kashmir: Historic Jamia Masjid opens in Srinagar for devotees

Srinagar, May 18 (UNI) Historic Jamia Masjid was open on Saturday after remaining closed as a precautionary measure for devotees on Friday, when separatists had called for a general strike against civilian and militant killings during this Holy month of Ramadhan.

All gates of the Masjid, which were locked yesterday, are open for devotees.

No Friday prayers could be offered because of restrictions around the Masjid where large number of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed to prevent people from assembling there.

However, security forces have been withdrawn. Road blocks established by the security forces on roads leading to Masjid were also removed.

Jamia Masjid was also open after remaining closed yesterday when security forces had been deployed there.

Historic Masjid is a stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who addresses Friday congregation every week.

Meanwhile, Shops and business establishments reopened and traffic was plying normally on all routes in the down town and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK).
