The temple dedicated to Shri Venkateshwara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is reportedly the wealthiest in the world. The temple situated in the Tirumala hills, a part of the Sheshachalam range in the Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh, has over 50,000 devotees visiting per day annually. One has to cross seven hills, namely, Vrishabhadri, Anjanadri, Niladri, Garudadri, Sheshadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri, to reach the temple complex.

Tirupati Balaji fulfils wishes of devotees and blesses them with bounty. The presiding god is considered to be very powerful because the sculpture is Swayambhu (meaning the self-made one). They tonsure their heads out of devotion, stands in long queues for hours and some devotees even walk miles barefoot to catch a glimpse of his.

The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Shri Vishnu. Elaborate religious festivals take place in the temple complex through the year, and the most significant is the Brahmotsavam which takes places annually in the Hindu month of Ashwina. The popular belief is that the event commemorates the self-manifestation day of Lord Venkateshwara. It is also believed that Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe, was the first to perform the Utsavam, and hence it is named after him. This Utsavam coincides with Sharadiya Navratri, and devotees believe that Lord Brahma visits the Earth to take part in the festivities.
