Jharkhand virus load past 10,000-mark, casualties now above 100

Ranchi: Jharkhand crossed two grim Covid-19 milestones – 10,000 cases and 100 casualties – as the state recorded four deaths and 505 fresh infections in 24 hours until 9pm on Thursday. Also, Ranchi, with 71 new cases, became the first district to get more than 2,000 infections. Jharkhand now has a caseload of 10,399, of which 6,120 are active, 4,176 have recovered and 103 have succumbed to the disease.

The figures include 134 new infections and one death put in Wednesday’s state government figures revised on Thursday morning. Most of these cases and the casualty were from East Singhbhum, which recorded its biggest single-day spike in new cases with 141 infections as per the revised figures.

On Thursday, Bokaro (81 cases) and West Singhbhum (50) recorded their biggest one-day surge. Giridih recorded 42 case and East Singhbhum 22. During the day, a total of 371 of 7,707 samples tested positive on Thursday, indicating a positivity rate of 4.8%.

Among the four casualties, two were reported from Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur and included one patient each from East and West Singhbhum districts. Ranchi and Lohargada reported one death each.

“A 58-year-old man from Sidhgora in Jamshedpur and an 82-year from Bhuiyan Tola in West Singhbhum died at TMH. The Jamshedpur resident was suffering from Acute Respiratory Deficiency Syndrome and the other man was admitted with complaints of breathlessness on July 27,” said a health department official. Ranchi and Lohardaga too detected one casualty each and both were suffering from comorbidities.

The state recorded a jump in number of samples tested compared to Wednesday, when around 4700 samples were tested. Health department officials said that the increase is a result of an additional virology lab that opened at Palamu Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday evening.
