Kalraj Mishra appointed Himachal Pradesh governor

LUCKNOW: Months, after he refused to contest the Lok Sabha elections, senior BJP leader and former Deoria MP Kalraj Mishra, was on Monday appointed as governor of Himachal Pradesh.

The former UP BJP chief Mishra has been the minister for small and medium scale industry in the previous Narendra Modi government.

He, however, resigned from the ministry in 2017. In March earlier this year, just before Lok Sabha elections, Mishra had decided against contesting parliamentary elections saying that "he had been given a lot of other responsibilities by the party and he wanted to devote his time towards that."

BJP leaders close to Mishra describe him as an 'articulate' and a 'visionary' leader who would understand the basic problems of party workers and would address them.

With strong backing from the RSS, Mishra has been a three-time Rajya Sabha MP - in 1978, 2001 and 2006 - and an MLA from Lucknow East assembly seat. He was a public works, medical education and tourism minister in UP government between March 1997 and August 2000. A resident of Ghazipur , Mishra also served as a member of the standing committee of Defence till August 2018.
