Kanpur: Man crushed to death in bid to save woman's life

KANPUR: A 60-year-old man was crushed to death by an SUV-borne man when he tried to stop the latter from strangling his wife inside the vehicle on GT Road in Chaubeypur area of the district on Monday.


Police said that the incident happened near Pratappur village after the victim, identified as Devi Prasad, heard loud shrieks coming from inside a parked SUV and tried to intervene.



“Prasad rushed to the spot and on giving a closer look, came across a man trying to strangle a woman inside the four-wheeler. He dragged the woman out of the vehicle and tried to tackle the alleged attacker. However, in the meanwhile the SUV-borne man ran the vehicle over Prasad, leaving him critically wounded. The man then fled the scene,” said SHO Chaubeypur.

The elderly man and the woman were taken to a hospital, where doctors declared Prasad ‘dead upon arrival’, while condition of the woman, identified as Renu, was stated to be stable.

The police said that as per the woman, the man who escaped from the site was her husband Chanda of Sarai Meera area of Kannauj. Renu, native of Naubasta was married to Chandan about 15 years ago. They were not in good terms since past few years. “We have registered an FIR against the accused at Chaubeypur police station and CCTV footage from the area is being combed to see which direction he had escaped,” said SSP Anant Deo.
