BAGALKOT: Hundreds of Dalit activists on Wednesday took to streets condemning the gruesome murder of a man and his nephew in Shirol village, Mudhol taluk.

The double murder has triggered tension in Bagalkot district . Mallappa Talageri, 65, and Vittal Talageri, 48, were hacked to death by miscreants on Tuesday. Police said the duo were going to their farm when they were attacked with sharp weapons. Cops suspect old enmity as the reason behind the murder. Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) leaders alleged that upper caste people were behind the murder.

On Wednesday, DSS leaders and family members of the murdered duo sat on a protest outside the district hospital where the bodies were shifted for postmortem. Dalit activists slammed the police for conducting an autopsy without the consent of the family members. Protesters later took out a rally to deputy commissioner K Rajendra's office. Police stopped the activists when they tried to enter Rajendra's office. Protesters kept the dead bodies outside the DC office and sat on a protest again.

Victim Mallappa's son Hanamant Talageri submitted a memorandum to the DC. The DC spoke to protesters and asked them to conduct the cremation ceremonies first. He assured them that strict action will be taken against the culprits. After the DC's assurance, family members cremated the bodies on Wednesday evening.
