As the counting of votes is underway in Karnataka, the trends show that the BJP is leading on 23-24 seats while the Congress and JD(S) are ahead on two and one seat respectively. On the remaining seat, an independent is a front-runner. The seats where BJP candidates are leading are -- Bagalkot, Bangalore North, Bangalore South, Bellary (ST), Belgaum, Bidar, Bijapur (SC), Chikkaballapur, Chikkodi, Chitradurga (SC), Dakishna Kannada, Davangere, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Haveri, Kolar (SC), Koppal, Mysore, Raichur (ST), Shimoga, Tumkur, Udupi-Chikmaglur and Uttara Kannada.

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has lost the election from Gulbarga to Umesh G Jadhav of the BJP. Other senior leaders who are also trailing are Veerappa Moily and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda of JD(S).

Buoyed by the initial trends indicating a landslide victory for the BJP in Karnataka, the saffron party in the state has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy. The outcome of the general elections may pose a threat to the fragile Congress-JD(S) government.
