Karnataka: Kalaburagi airport begins operations today

BENGALURU: The Kalaburagi airport will be operational from Friday, with a Star Air direct flight from Bengaluru landing at the aerodrome in the afternoon.

According to officials, the runway spans 3,400 metres, which makes it the ninthlongest runway strip in Airports Authority of India-owned airports.

Chief minister BS Yediyurappa will inaugurate the airport.

DGCA had on October 4 issued aerodrome licence for Kalaburagi airport. The Star Air-operated thrice-a-week Kalaburagi-Bengaluru flight will be the first service from there on Friday. It will depart Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at 12.20pm and land in Kalaburagi at 1.25pm. The first flight scheduled for departure from Kalaburagi airport is at 1.55pm and will reach Bengaluru at 3pm.

After Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Amritsar, Kolkata, and Jaipur and Mumbai, Kalaburagi occupies the ninth spot along with Kochi airport in the list of the longest runways in the country. Officials said the runway could be expanded in future and parallel runway operations is also a possibility.

Kalaburagi regional commissioner Subodh Yadav said, “The new airport has been designed to offer passengers a modern-day feel, keeping their comfort in mind. It resembles the Mangaluru airport in look and feel.”

“Though only one service is available at present, Kalaburagi-Tirupati and Kalaburagi-Hindon are two routes that were announced as part of the second phase of UDAN regional connectivity scheme. Now that the airport is operational, airlines can look at starting services on these two routes as well,” he added.
