Kasaragod: Man arrested for murder

KANNUR: Kasaragod police have arrested a 35-year-old man on the charge of murdering his wife and also dumping the body in a river to destroy evidence. However, the police team probing the case is yet to trace the body.

The arrest of the accused, Sheljo Jose, was made on the basis of his confessional statement and the efforts to recover the body would continue, said police.

According to Sheljo, he dumped the body of his wife Pramila into the Chandragiri River in Kasaragod after she died accidentally when he had beaten her up during a scuffle on September 19 night.

However, he lodged a police complaint at Vidyanagar police station the next day, saying that Pramila has gone missing and raised suspicion that she would have eloped.

Though the police launched a probe, they could not get any lead into the case, following which they questioned the complainant again, which unravelled the bizarre case. Moreover, Sheljo did not come to the police station to inquire about the missing complaint even after a few weeks, which also put him under the shadow of suspicion.

Police said Sheljo, who hails from Manakkadavu, near Alakkode in Kannur district, met Pramila, who was native of Kundara in Kollam, when he was working at a company in Ernakulam, almost 14 years ago. Later, they got married and moved to Kasaragod and started living in a rented house at Pannipara in Vidyanagar. They have two children. Sheljo said he had a fight with his wife during which her head hit the ground and she died. In order to escape from the case, he packed the body in a gunny bag and tied a stone to it and dumped it in the river. Police said there was contradiction in his statements and that he would be questioned again.
