Kerala: Eight districts under yellow alert as more rain expected

KOCHI: With the cyclone Amphan becoming a super-cyclone, gale wind speed reaching 170-180kmph gusting to 200kmph is likely to prevail over northern parts of central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal. Its effect will be seen on the Kerala coast with strong winds and rough seas on Tuesday also.

This is expected to bring heavy rains to Kerala with the weather department warning of rainfall of 7-11cm.

A yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts.

The sea will be very rough and there is a strong advisory against venturing into the sea.

The much-awaited southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and south Andaman Sea in the next 48 hours.

There is a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, speed reaching 40-50kmph likely at one or two places till Thursday.

Earlier, as the cyclone intensified, the state was hit by heavy gale winds and rainfall on Sunday evening. Trees were uprooted in many places. The entire state was on yellow alert on Monday.

Pathanamthitta has received large excess rains of more than 60% while four districts - Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad - received excess rainfall while Kasaragod remains deficient.

Meanwhile, on Monday Quilandy (Kozhikode) recorded the highest rainfall of 9cm followed by Kollam, Kozha (Kottayam), Vadakara (Kozhikode) getting 8 cm of rain each. Karipur airport (Malappuram) received 7 cm while Kannur, Mancompu (Alappuzha) and Perumbavur (Ernakulam) got 6 cm each. Alappuzha, Vaikom (Kottayam), Ambalavayal & Kuppady (Wayanad) and Kudulu (Kasaragod) received 5cm rainfall each.
