Kerala floods: Two relief camps opened in Chengannur of Alappuzha

ALAPPUZHA: In the wake of heavy rain, two relief camps were opened in Chengannur taluk here. Nearly 25 people of eight families were shifted to these two camps of whom 13 are kept at Thiruvanvandoor Government HSS and 12 are at JB School, Keecherimel.



Kerala public works department (PWD) minister G Sudhakaran said that in Kuttanad, there was chance of increament in water level of river Pamba looking at the present condition of the rain.

“So we have directed the officials to shift the people to safe locations if situation demands. At least 15 roads in the district are submerged in the heavy rain and majority of these roads are in Kuttanad. Though water entered some parts of Alappuzha-Changanssery road, now the road is not submerged. The district is fully equipped to manage emergency situations. People are advised not to panic,’’ the minister said.

The minister cancelled all his official programmes and took over the control of the relief activities in Alappuzha. He along with government officials called at Andhakaranazhi spillway, Thanneermukkom bund, Thottappally spillway, Alappuzha-Changanassery Road. Of 40 shutters of Thottappally spillway, 38 shutters were lifted. Thanneermukkom bund’s 90 shutters are remaining opened. Andhakaranazhi spillway’s 20 shutters are also remaining opened.

Speaking to newsmen here on Friday evening, G Sudhakaran said that state highways destroyed in the state at least 60 places owing to heavy rain and landslide. In Idukki, roads were destroyed in 26 places, the minister added.

Owing to heavy rain, the fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea till 12 pm on Saturday.

Within two days, seven houses were destroyed and 167 houses partially damaged in heavy rain and ghastly wind. Sea erosion reported on Friday from Kattoor areas and revenue officials are monitoring the situation. During this monsoon season, over 372 houses were partially damaged, and 27 houses were destroyed from June 8 till Friday. Many houses and worship places in and around Thalavady of Kuttanad submerged.

The train services between Kayamkulam – Ernakulam via Alappuzha will remain suspended till further notice due to unsafe weather conditions, falling of trees on to track and subsequent disruption of rail traffic. Major long distance trains running in this section will be diverted via Kottayam line and the situation will be reviewed on Saturday, informed Railway officials.
