Kerala, Tamil Nadu IS module: NIA conducts raids in Coimbatore

Kochi: In yet another development in the investigation of Islamic State (IS) Kerala-Tamil Nadu Module case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has identified five more persons who were associated with the team that plotted terror attacks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala . The NIA team from Kochi conducted raids at the residences of the five persons in Coimbatore city simultaneously on Thursday based on warrants issued by the NIA court, Kochi.



The case was registered by NIA on May 30. The five persons identified are Mohammed Azarudeen of Ukkadam, Azharuddin T of Nanjundapuram, Podanur; Sheik Hidyathullah of Alameen Colony, South Ukkadam; Aboobacker M of Kuniamuthur, Sadham Hussain of Aasath Nagar, Karimbukadai and Ibrahim Shahin of Mania Thottam. Two more members — Azarudeen and Shiek Hidayathullah — were arrested by the agency later. The subsequent probe found that more persons were linked with the group.

“Notices have been given to the five persons, whose houses were searched in Coimbatore to appear at NIA office in Kochi for interrogation on Friday. We received proofs that these people were in touch with the leader of the group and attended secret classes propagating IS ideology,” sources said.

An official statement from the NIA claimed that these individuals and their associates were propagating the ideology of the proscribed terrorist organization ISIS/ Daish on social media with the intention of recruiting vulnerable youth into the the outfit and carrying out terrorist attacks in South India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

During the raids, at the houses of five associates of the accused persons, digital devices including a laptop, five mobile phones, four SIM cards, a memory card, and eight CDs/ DVDs along with a large number of incriminating documents have been seized.

The seized digital devices will be subjected to forensic examination. The suspects are being examined regarding their association with the arrested accused persons and their involvement in the conspiracy, intended at furthering the objectives of ISIS/ Daish.
