Khandwa: Juvenile beaten to death at govt remand home

INDORE: A 17-year-old was beaten to death by a fellow inmate at a juvenile detention home in Ratagarh area of Khandwa district on Tuesday morning.

The victim was in detention in a theft case while the accused is implicated in an attempted murder. Now, he has been charged with murder under IPC 302.

The fight broke out around 8.45am in the courtyard of the juvenile home after one abused the other. Within moments, the quarrel turned into a fist-fight. The accused punched and kicked the victim on his chest and stomach. Other detainees stood and watched. No one tried to stop the fight or help the victim, say sources.

The victim collapsed after being pummelled by the murder-bid accused. Guards heard his screams for help and came rushing but by then he was lying unconscious. They took him to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Khandwa SP Siddhartha Bahuguna said the boys were sitting in the courtyard when a dispute broke out, and they beat each other. “The victim suffered injuries to the head and chest, and died,” he said. The accused juvenile was also injured in the fight and admitted to hospital.

The victim was a resident of Harda town and was in detention for the past month. The accused has been at the juvenile home since January this year.
