Khedut Samaj Gujarat sends fodder for cattle from Kutch

SURAT: Khedut Samaj Gujarat’s Surat unit has sent 20 ,000kg of dry and green fodder to Sanand for cattle brought there from Kutch district. Cattle breeders have shifted their cattle to Sanand because of water scarcity in Kutch. A truckload of 20,000kg of fodder would be daily sent for these cattle by farmers from South Gujarat.

Darshan Nayak, a farmer leader, said, “We discussed the issue at a meeting on Friday and decided to send green fodder for nearly 5,000 cattle brought to Sanand from Banni area of Kutch. Farmers from Olpad and Kamrej talukas are contributing most for this mission”

Jayesh Patel, a member of Khedut Samaj Gujarat, said, “Farmers in our area grow green sugar cane for cattle fodder. We are getting some from them either as donation or on payment for these cattle in Sanand.”

The first consignment of fodder left for Sanand on Saturday. Khedut Samaj Gujarat will incur a cost of Rs35,000 daily on sending the fodder for the cattle.

Patel said Ahmedabad district collector had asked the cattle breeders to return, but Khedut Samaj Gujarat intervened and made arrangement of fodder for their cattle. A few farmers said around 8,000 cattle were brought from Banni to Sanand and that nearly 3,000 have since died. “We will keep sending the fodder until monsoon comes and reduces water scarcity situation in Kutch and elsewhere in the state.”
