Kingpin of gunrunners held, weapons seized in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The kingpin of a syndicate that allegedly supplies weapons to gangs of Najafgarh and outer Delhi areas has been arrested.

Based in Mangolpuri, the accused Ajay Gautam would send his carriers to procure weapons from manufacturers in Khargone in Madhya Pradesh and Dholpur, Rajasthan. The pistols were bought for Rs 6,000-8,000 and sold for up to Rs 25,000.



“Gautam (38) was arrested by a team led by ACP Attar Singh and inspector Ishwar Singh. Two semi-automatic pistols, two magazines and ten live cartridges were seized ,” said Pramod Kushwaha, DCP (Special Cell).

Southern range of the Special Cell had received a tip-off that a gang of gunrunners led by Ajay Gautam was involved in supplying of firearms in northern states of the country, including Delhi-NCR. In a raid on April 29, the cops seized 30 firearms including 29 pistols with five magazines and one small rifle, and two members of Gautam’s gang were arrested. Gautam managed to escape.

The two arrested men, Ranjit Singh alias Neetu Jaat of Dholpur and Nakshe Lal of Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, gave leads about his whereabouts. A non-bailable warrant was also issued against Gautam. Finally, Gautam was arrested on Friday.

The accused told police that he was last arrested in 2010 by UP Police, who had also busted his arms consignment.

In 2009, he came in contact with an arms supplier of Mainpuri, who lured him to work as his carrier. Gradually, he came into contact of another weapon supplier in Khargone and started getting firearms from him too.

Police are trying to apprehend other members of his syndicate.
