Kochi: High tide alert issued in Ernakulam

KOCHI: District collector S Suhas has warned people living along the coastal areas of Ernakulam to be cautious as the coastal belt is expected to see more tidal surge in the next three to four days.


“There will be high tide between 6am and 1pm in next three to four days. The height of waves may rise to 3-4.7m in the next 48 hours.

Low-lying areas are likely to get flooded due to the heavy rain. To monitor the situation in dams and sea erosion in coastal areas, a team headed by irrigation superintendent engineer has been formed at the collectorate,” he said.

A total of 38 relief camps have been opened in Ernakulam housing 1,185 inmates from 439 families. Most of the camps are opened in North Paravur with 13 camps housing 487 inmates.

The district received more rainfall on Saturday compared to the previous day, shows the daily weather report of Indian meteorological department (IMD). The weather station in Piravom recorded 14.44cm rainfall on Saturday as against 8.93cm on Friday.

Cial, Naval Base and Aluva stations also recorded 11.34cm, 10.62cm and 11.1cm rainfall, respectively. Meanwhile, Perumbavoor which received 13.2cm rainfall on Friday received only 5.2cm on Saturday.

No major flooding was reported from low-lying areas of the district.

Meanwhile, Ernakulam suffered loss of Rs 1.22 crore due to the damages suffered in the heavy rain.
