Kochi: Three men arrested for murder bid

KOCHI: Rural police arrested three persons for allegedly attempting to murder a 25-year-old man at Kodanad.

The arrested persons have been identified as Midhun (24), Pradeesh (31) and Ashokan (20), all Kodanad residents. Rahul Raj, a Koovapady resident, was allegedly stabbed on the right side of his stomach by the three men following an argument.



According to police, the incident took place around 2pm on Thursday when Rahul was driving his friend's car through Kodanad. Rahul was allegedly waylaid by the trio, and when the former questioned it, the men verbally abused him. Then, Pradeesh and Aashith forcefully held Rahul and Midhun stabbed him with an iron rod, said police.

The victim was immediately rushed to a hospital. A case was registered against the men under Sections 307(attempt to murder), 294(b) (obscenity), 341(punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34(common intention).

Man held for impersonating as naval officer

A 28-year-old man was arrested by Palarivattom police on Thursday for impersonating a naval officer and duping job aspirants by promising jobs at the naval base.

The accused has been identified as Jobin Manuel (28), a resident of Kottayam.

The man used to run an agency called Gazza International in Palarivattom. "We were informed by a reliable source and on further investigation it was found that the accused possessed a fake Navy ID card, seals and uniform," said a police officer.

Further inquiry revealed that the man had conned at least two people of about Rs 3 lakh in cash.

An FIR has been filed under Section 465 (punishment for forgery).

Nitrazepam tablets seized

Ernakulam excise special squad on Friday arrested a person for allegedly attempting to peddle Nitrazepam tablets, a hypnotic drug prescribed for relief from anxiety and insomnia.

As many as 130 tablets were seized from the accused. He was identified as Ajaz (27), hailing from Aluva . Excise officials claimed that he used to supply alcohol and drug tablets at parties held on vacant plots during weekends.

He was nabbed in a raid after the special squad inspector received a tip-off. Slueths said that the accused supplied the drug to youths from Aluva, Vazhakkulam and Kodikuthumala.

Excise would launch probe around the accused in previous narcotic cases in Vazhakkulam and Kodikuthumala areas to find the sources of the contraband.

Migrant worker dies

A 48-year-old migrant labourer working for a construction company died after falling off a girder, while he was engaged in Kochi Metro works at Vytilla on Friday.

The deceased person has been identified as West Bengal native Dipanker Roy.

According to police, the incident happened in the early hours of Friday. Though the man was rushed to a hospital, his life couldn't be saved, said police. Maradu police have registered a case in connection.
