Kolar most crime prone area, reveal police data

Bhopal: Kolar police station has retained its infamous position for most crimes across the city. Last year, too, Kolar topped the charts when it came to crime incidents.

It has also emerged as the most burglary prone area in the state capital.

According to police data, Kolar also recorded the maximum number of burglaries this year till July 31.

The other area which reported a high number of theft cases is Govindpura, which comprises Govindpura, Piplani and Awadhpuri police stations. Bag Sewania and TT Nagar followed at the third position in the list.

Senior police officers maintain that the jurisdiction of Kolar area is very wide and there is an immediate need to set up a new police station and outpost to guard the area well. There is a force of around 70 policemen deployed at Kolar police station to monitor an area with a population of around 3.5 lakh. This means there is only one cop per 5,000 people.

A major burglary incident was reported at Kolar police station on Tuesday when robbers targeted a locked house of a general manager of a private company Mohammed Parvez Khan, (53), a resident of Royal Bhagwan Estate Colony. Thieves decamped with Rs 2.5 lakh cash along with jewellery worth more than Rs4 lakh.

Khan told TOI that he along with his wife and younger son Nasir had gone to Mumbai on September 13 to attend the engagement ceremony of his elder son Navez, who is a civil engineer. When he returned home on Tuesday morning around 8.30am, he found the centre lock of the main gate of his house open.

Khan said that both the ground and first floors were ransacked by the robbers. Locks of cupboards and three almirahs were also broken and jewellery worth around Rs4 lakh along with Rs2.5 lakh cash are missing.

Incidentally, there were no CCTVs installed in the colony. Despite the police advisories, many covered campus colonies still have no CCTV cameras. Cops have now started conducting meetings with various organizations and residential societies under the ‘Bhopal Eye’ campaign and citizens are being told to install quality CCTV cameras on their residential premises.

ASP Zone-1 Akhil Patel admitted that Kolar has become a favourite spot for burglars in the recent months. He said that the jurisdiction area of Kolar police station is extremely wide and demographically versatile.

Speaking about the theft incidents in Govindpura division CSP Amit Kumar said that the main reason behind the rise in the number of theft incidents is the abandoned dilapidated BHEL quarters. Many anti-socials occupy these houses and commit crimes in the area. The Piplani area is mostly occupied by BHEL staff, who reside in isolated houses and when they are out of station, burglars target the locked houses. Kumar said that many college students also reside in various hostels in the area and they study at night. They leave their rooms open and thefts take place. Recently Piplani police nabbed a South Indian gang, which targeted the rooms of such students and stole laptops.

When police nabbed three gang members, they pretended to be dumb. Three days later when they finally spoke after sustained interrogation, they confessed of stealing around 70 laptops in the area but the stolen booty could not be recovered. ASP (crime branch) Nishchal Jharia said that the burglars are also targeting vehicles. He said that a notorious gang from Dewas is active in the city and Kolar has become their favourite spot.

Jharia said that under the ‘Bhopal Eye’ initiative, cops are making citizens aware and have requested them to install good quality night vision CCTV cameras on their premises for their own safety.
