Kolkata biker molests woman in car

Kolkata: A 20-year-old woman travelling in a car was allegedly harassed and molested by a biker on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Avishikta crossing around 9pm on Wednesday. The accused, Ram Sharma, a carpenter and a resident of Sonarpur, was arrested and released on bail on Thursday.

Following the incident, patrolling was stepped up in the area.

According to the woman, the incident occurred when the car she was travelling in stopped at the signal before the EM Bypass-Prince Anwar Shah Road connector intersection. The bike-borne accused approached the car from the left and made obscene gestures at her. When she cried out in protest, he misbehaved and made some objectionable remarks. The woman then alerted a traffic policeman who, in turn, radioed other cops deployed on the road ahead and the accused was nabbed.

Cops have slapped Sharma with IPC sections pertaining to outraging the modesty of a woman. Her statement will be recorded before a magistrate soon, an investigating officer said.

“We are checking CCTV footage to find out how long the accused had been following the car and when he began disturbing the complainant. We will also investigate if the accused had violated traffic rules,” said an investigating officer.

Family members of the accused claimed he was being framed. They also said he was ill and needed medical attention. Police have asked the family to furnish medical documents to support their claim.
