Kolkata: Slapped, tailor dies in hospital

Kolkata/Chakdah: The owner of a clothes manufacturing unit in Chitpore slapped a tailor , Samir Sadhukha (36) from Chakdah in Nadia, which led to the latter’s death on Friday. The accused, Laltu Poddar, has been arrested.

The two had a fight over Poddar reportedly not paying Sadhukha his dues of Rs 35,000 but pressuring him to deliver more stitched clothes as the Puja season had started.

“A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against Poddar at the Chitpore police station,” an officer said.

Besides running a blouse manufacturing unit at Chitpore, Poddar was a wholesale dealer for major brands. “He bought raw materials. Tailors on contract stitched blouses and gave them back for sale. The tailors were paid Rs 100 a piece. While Rs 80 was paid up front, Rs 20 was paid in two instalments, during the Bengali New year and the Puja. Of late, Sadhukha had stopped supplying stitched clothes, saying Poddar owed him money,” police said.

After the fight that followed the argument between the two, Sadhukha fell ill while returning home in a tempo. He was admitted to RG Kar Hospital, where he died three hours later.
