Korba doctors remove battery from baby's throat

RAIPUR: Doctors in Korba saved the life of an eight-month-old girl who had swallowed a lithium battery. According to sources, the patient was brought for treatment four hours late. However, doctors managed to save the infant.

The incident took place in Korba on Sunday, when the eight-month-old baby girl started showing symptoms of uneasiness and wasn't eating anything.
The parents then noticed that batteries from the remote control were gone and suspected that the infant had swallowed. The parents then rushed her to ENT specialist Dr Neelima Bhat around 9:00pm.

Dr Bhat diagnosed the baby girl and conducted an x-ray which showed the batteries stuck in her alimentary canal. The doctor immediately called on a paediatrician and anaesthesiologist and removed the cell through laparoscopy procedure in 45 minutes.

Dr Bhat said that as per a research, lithium ion batteries are dangerous for health and ooze out more than 100 types of gases including carbon monoxide. If the cell had been left unattended more than five hours then it would have been fatal for the infant, she said. Dr Bhatt added that the battery swallowed by the child started leaking its chemical in her throat causing her alimentary canal to shrink. Due to this, the baby was becoming breathless.

Doctors added that the child's condition is reported to be stable and had been discharged after overnight admission.
