Vadodara: Lacklustre voting was witnessed for the bypolls for the Lunavada assembly seat in Mahisagar district with 51.23% voters turning up at polling booths. The polls have been necessitated as former Lunawada MLA Ratansinh Rathod contested the Lok Sabha election from Panchmahal parliamentary seat and won.
Rathod had won the 2017 assembly polls as an independent after rebelling against the Congress. He subsequently joined the BJP and was given the ticket for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
The polls are a contest between BJP’s Jignesh Sevak and Congress’ Gulabsinh Chauhan. Sevak is the chairman of the executive committee of the Mahisagar district panchayat while Chauhan is the son of former state minister Somsinh Chauhan.
Eyes will also be set on the performance of NCP candidate Bharat Patel. He is eyeing Patidar votes in the constituency that had witnessed some action during the Patidar quota agitation. He could spoil the chances of the frontrunners if he garners good votes.
