Man Accused of Murdering Grandparents in UP Held in Maharashtra

A man accused of hacking to death his grandparents in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh was held in Thane in Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.

Munnawar Mohhamad Gaffar Ali (22) killed his grandfather Vazid Hussain (65) and grandmother Shamina (62) with an axe in Amethi on October 4, said Thane Crime Branch senior inspector Nitin Thakre.

8 Injured in Clash Between Police, Locals in Malda

Eight persons, including four police personnel were injured in a clash between the force and locals, including relatives of a missing college student who put up a blockade demanding prompt investigation into the case, a senior police official said.

The clash took place at Malda Town-Bhaluka Road in Rotua when the large posse of policemen trying to disperse the agitators who threw stones at them, resorted to baton charging and bursting tear gas shells, he said.

The personal secretary of Union minister Santosh Gangwar died in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur after his car collided with a truck, police said on Saturday, 19 October.

Superintendent of Police (city) Dinesh Tripathi said that Brijesh Kumar Tiwari, (44), the personal secretary to the labour and employment minister, was travelling in his car from Farrukhabad to Bareilly on Friday night when it collided with a truck that was in front of it near Madnapur.

7 Atomic Power Reactors Under Construction, 17 More On The Way: Vyas

To increase standardisation and bring modularity in building atomic power reactors, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is going for fleet mode construction for future projects, DAE Secretary KN Vyas said on Friday, 18 October.

Speaking at the India Energy Forum's Nuclear Conclave, he said 17 new reactors are now in the pipeline, with seven already under construction.

"We are going in for fleet mode for construction, thereby reducing construction costs and speeding up construction time," Vyas, who is also the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, said.

Man Gets Three Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Molesting Minor

A local court in Thane has sentenced a man from Bhiwandi to three years of rigorous imprisonment for molesting a five-year-old girl in 2013.

District Judge DG Murumkar on Friday, 18 October, convicted 30-year-old Irfan Iqbal Momim under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court that the victim was Momim's neighbour. On 24 December 2013, Momim called her to his place and molested her.

India has slammed Pakistan for raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at a forum of the UN, saying that the country employs "empty rhetoric" to serve its "distorted agenda" and continues to engage in spreading unsubstantiated allegations.

Minister in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Deepak Misra did not name Pakistan but his remarks were in response to a statement by Islamabad's UN envoy Maleeha Lodhi, who while speaking at forum last week, had yet again raked up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Indian-Origin Man Given Extra Prison Time for Failing to Self-Surrender for First Sentence

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nine additional months in prison for failing to self-surrender to serve his prison sentence. 34-year-old Damanpreet Singh of Los Angeles, was handed down the sentence last week by US District Judge Garland Burrell, US Attorney McGregor Scott said.

According to court documents, in September last year, Singh was sentenced to two years in prison for conspiring to commit bribery, identity fraud and unauthorised access of a computer.

"Positive Impact on Investment": IMF on India's Corporate Tax Cut

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday, 18 October supported India’s recent decision to reduce corporate income tax, saying it has a positive impact on investment.

It, however, said India should address continued fiscal consolidation and secure long-term stability of the fiscal conditions.

"We believe India still has limited fiscal space so they have to be careful. We support their corporate income tax cut because it has a positive impact on investment," Changyong Rhee, Director, Asia and Pacific Department, IMF, told reporters at a news conference in Washington.

India-US Bilateral Defence Trade to Reach USD 18 Billion This Year: Pentagon

Ahead of the ninth India-US Defence Technologies and Trade Initiative or DTTI group meeting in New Delhi next week, the Pentagon on Saturday, 19 October said the bilateral defence trade between the two countries is expected to reach USD 18 billion by year end.

Undersecretary Of Defense For Acquisition And Sustainment Ellen M Lord said the US is committed to strengthen its partnership with India while furthering military-to-military relationships and cooperation.

“Bilateral defence trade, essentially zero in 2008, will reach an estimated USD 18 billion later this year,” she told reporters at the Pentagon.

Gabbard Slams Hillary Clinton Over Russia Remarks

Hillary Clinton warned that Russia is grooming a US Democratic candidate for a third-party run next year, prompting the accused Tulsi Gabbard to unleash an all-out attack on the "queen of warmongers" ex-secretary of state.

Clinton – and history from her 2016 presidential defeat to Donald Trump – suggested that the result of the Russian-backed move would be to divide the US electorate and help Trump win again in 2020.

"I think they've got their eye on somebody who's currently in the Democratic primary, and they're grooming her to be the third-party candidate," Clinton said on the "Campaign HQ" podcast that first aired Thursday.

"She's the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far." Clinton did not name Gabbard, but the Hawaii congresswoman essentially acknowledged she was the target by blasting out a stunning Twitter thread against the former first lady.
