JNUSU to March to Parliament on First Day of Winter Session

JNU Students’ Union has called for a long march in protest, “to save public institutions of higher education”, on the first day of Parliament’s winter session.

The students will be marching on foot from JNU to the Parliament .

JNUSU has also appealed to students outside Delhi to organize protest gathering on 18 November to mark a National Day of Protest “to safeguard education as a right, and oppose its transformation into a commodity”.

Aramco Declares $1.71 Trillion Valuation in Blockbuster IPO

Saudi Arabia on Sunday, 17 November, put a value of up to 1.71 trillion dollars on energy giant Aramco in what could be the world's biggest IPO, but missed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's initial target of 2 trillion dollars.

Aramco said it would sell 1.5 percent of the company in a blockbuster initial public offering worth at least 24 billion dollars.

Premadasa Concedes Sri Lanka Presidential Poll to Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka's ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa on Sunday, 17 November, conceded the presidential poll and congratulated his main rival, former wartime defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

"It is my privilege to honour the decision of the people and congratulate Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his election as the seventh President of Sri Lanka," Premadasa said.

His statement came as a spokesman for Rajapaksa claimed that the 70-year-old retired lieutenant colonel had won Saturday's vote, before the final results were formally announced.

Mechanical Issue Forces Flight to Land in Pittsburgh

An American Airlines flight was forced to land at Pittsburgh International Airport due to a mechanical issue on Sunday.

The airline says Flight 2244 had departed about 7:30 am Saturday from Chicago and was bound for Washington with 72 passengers and six crew members aboard.

The Boeing 737-800 landed in Pittsburgh at 9:30 am without incident and soon taxied to a gate.

Trump Aide Curbed Access to Ukraine Call, Fearing Fallout

A top US official restricted access to the summary of Donald Trump's Ukraine call that triggered an impeachment probe, fearing it would damage the president, testimony released on Saturday, 16 November, showed.

White House Ukraine expert Timothy Morrison told House investigators he knew immediately how sensitive the call was when he heard Trump press Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former US vice president Joe Biden.

Rajapaksa Takes Early Lead in Sri Lanka Election

Sri Lanka's former wartime defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa took an early lead on Sunday in a fiercely fought presidential election conducted under high security seven months after deadly Islamist attacks.

Rajapaksa, the main opposition candidate, was leading with 52.87 percent while housing minister Sajith Premadasa had 39.67 percent out of half a million votes counted, according to the Election Commission.

Leftist Anura Kumara Dissanayake was in third place with 4.69 percent. There were 32 other candidates for the top job.
