Lightning forecast for Ganjam, Rayagada dists today!

Bhubaneswar: With the solar insolation being measured at around 1100 watt per square metre in some places in Ganjam and Rayagada districts, and the humidity there were estimated at over 90 per cent, the prediction is lightning activities may occur in the said districts today.

A study of IMD and Skymet weather analysis shows that the places like Bhanjanagar in Ganjam, Gunupur in Rayagada districts in the State may experience lightning spell today.

Moreover, as the Monsoon is active in Odisha today, rain has been predicted at isolated places in districts like Ganjam, Bolangir, Rayagada, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Sambalpur and Mayurbhanj. Rain has also been predicted for the Bhubaneswar city today.

Since the State has till date recorded a deficient rainfall of 3 per cent vis-a-vis the normal rainfall observed over the years, IMD has declared the Monsoon rainfall in Odisha till date as normal. As per IMD parlance, deficient rainfall of up to 20 per cent is categorised as normal rainfall. Similarly, rainfall in excess up to 20 per cent is bracketed as normal rainfall.

However, as on August 17, a district-wise analysis revealed that as many as seven districts in Odisha are in the deficient bracket. These districts have recorded rainfall less than the normal by around 22 – 38 per cent. Only one district, Koraput, has recorded 36 per cent excess rainfall vis-a-vis the normal.

Among the deficient list,  Balasore tops with 38 per cent deficient rainfall. It is followed by Deogarh with 32 per cent less than normal rainfall. Other districts in the deficit category are: Angul, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayubhanj and Kendrapada.

It needs mentioning that in August first week, the State had around 15 districts in the deficient bracket. The number has been sliced to half in mid-August. IMD predictions show the State may end up with normal rainfall in all the districts by the end of Monsoon period in September.
