Discussions on with Cong-NCP, we still have 6 months: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said that his discussions with NCP-Congress combine were on over the formation of government in Maharashtra and that they "still have six months" at their disposal.

"When parties of varying ideologies come together, it is important to discuss and clear some issues.

So we are discussing," Thackeray said at a press conference in Mumbai.

Will decide future course of action after due consultations: NCP-Congress

The NCP and Congress in a joint press conference on Tuesday said that they would decide the future course of action about forming the government in Maharashtra after "due consultations on all aspects".

NCP president Sharad Pawar said that the NCP-Congress alliance is in “no hurry” to rush with government formation with Shiv Sena.

“It has been decided that all aspects and points must be discussed before we take a big decision (regarding government formation with Shiv Sena),” NCP leader Praful Patel said.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel said the three parties would try to work out the modalities “as soon as possible”.

No urgent hearing accorded to Shiv Sena by SC

The Supreme Court registry has informed Shiv Sena lawyer it is not possible to constitute a bench on Tuesday itself. The registry has asked the Sena lawyer to mention the matter for hearing Wednesday morning before court of CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

Meanwhile, the party’s lawyer said that the fresh/second petition challenging the imposition of President's Rule is being readied. The decision when to file the second petition in SC will be taken on Wednesday, he said.

President's Rule imposed in Maharashtra

President's Rule has been imposed in Maharashtra following the recommendation by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari earlier in the day.

Amid the uncertainty over government formation in Maharashtra, senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmed Patel and K C Venugopal have arrived in Mumbai to meet Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar.

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has already sent his recommendation to the Centre for President’s Rule in the state, hours after he invited NCP, the third largets party in state Assembly, to show its intent to form the government.

However, the Governor denied 48 hours time sought by both Shiv Sena and NCP for them to procure letters of support from other parties and independent MLAs.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar is mediating between its alliance partner Congress and Shiv Sena to patch up a coalition and stake claim to form the government.

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Maharashtra governor's decision of not granting it the three days to submit the letter of support for government formation in the state.

The lawyers, appearing for the Shiv Sena, told PTI that they have made a request to the registrar for according urgent hearing on Tuesday itself and said they are yet to get a response.

The Shiv Sena has termed the governor's Monday decision as unconstitutional, unreasonable and mala fide, reports PTI.

Union Cabinet recommends President's rule in Maharashtra

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday recommended President's rule in Maharashtra where no political party has been able to form a government after the assembly polls last month.

Sources said the Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met here this afternoon to discuss the political impasse in Maharashtra and decided to recommend to the president to impose Central rule in the state.

After the meeting, the prime minister left for Brazil to attend the BRICS summit.

Uddhav, BJP leaders visit ailing Sena MP Raut

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday met party leader Sanjay Raut at a hospital in Mumbai where the latter underwent angioplasty.

BJP leaders Harshvardhan Patil and Ashish Shelar also met Raut at the Lilavati Hospital here following which the latter said it was a courtesy visit with "no political angle".

Thackeray met 57-year-old Raut along with Patil.

Former Mumbai BJP chief Shelar also met the Sena's Rajya Sabha member and later said, "Doctors have advised Raut to speak less. I met him out of courtesy. It is Maharashtra's culture, we meet unwell people irrespective of political differences."

"There was no political angle to this meet. A senior BJP office-bearer is also admitted in the same hospital, I also met him," he added.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and authorised three senior party leaders to hold further talks on the issue of government formation in Maharashtra.

As hectic deliberations continued, Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge and K C Venugopal would be leaving for Mumbai later in the day for holding discussions with NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

Even as the Shiv Sena failed to muster numbers to stake claim for government formation in Maharashtra, its ailing leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday quoted lines of legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan to reaffirm his party's resolve to succeed and not give up.

Raut, who on Monday underwent angioplasty at a hospital here, tweeted two lines from Bachchan's famous poem: "Lehron se dar kar nauka paar nahi hoti, himmat karne waalon ki kabhi haar nahi hoti" (the boat that qualms the waves never gets across, those who dare do not lose).

The Rajya Sabha member further tweeted, "Hum honge kamyaab, zaroor honge" (we would succeed, definitely).

At least 15 people were killed and over 50 others injured in a head-on collision between two trains in Brahmanbaria district in east-central Bangladesh on Tuesday, according to media reports.
