Lovelorn couple attempts suicide in Fatehpur district
KANPUR: Two lovers attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in Fatehpur’s Eetgaon area under Khaga police station on Sunday.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot and admitted them to the district hospital from where the two were rushed to a hospital in Kanpur. Both of them were found in an unconscious state.
The reason behind them taking the extreme step is yet to be known, the police said.
Initially, they were admitted to the district hospital, but when their condition deteriorated, the police rushed them to a hospital in Kanpur.
The girl Reema, 19, (name changed), a native of a village under Khaga police station, was in love with a local youth Ajay, 22, (name changed), and both wanted to get married, the police said.
“They reportedly told their parents about their plan to get married but the latter refused to grant them permission. Following resistance from their parents, the two on Sunday morning eloped from their respective homes and attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in the jungles of Newanipur village,” police said. Inspector Khaga Kotwali Parshuram said that prima facie it appeared that they had entered into a suicide pact, but the exact reason behind their extreme step would only be ascertained, once police recorded their statement after they regained consciousness.

“About three years ago, the girl’s parents had lodged an FIR against the boy of raping her when she was a minor. Subsequently, the police, acting on the basis of the complaint, had sent the youth to jail. After procuring bail, they again started meeting each other. Further investigations are continuing in this regard,” the inspector further said.
