Lucknow: Better civic upkeep at Vrindavan Yojana

LUCKNOW: More than 5.6 lakh residents of Vrindavan Yojana can hope for improved standards of living with UP Housing Development Board (UPHDB) handing over the task of civic amenities to Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC).

The LMC will henceforth maintain roads and streetlights, ensure door-to-door garbage collection, place bins along roads, clean drains and also rein in stray animals in 11 sectors of Vrindavan Colony, Utrethia and colonies around SGPGI developed by the housing board.

The board will pay LMC Rs 4.32 crore per annum for the job.

When TOI visited some of these areas, it came across bumpy roads without lights, mounds of garbage on the roadside and stray cattle everywhere.

Manju Devi, a resident of Vrindavan Colony, complained that their daily life was a struggle. “We think twice before stepping out of our homes because stray animals attack people,” she said.

Utrethia resident Girish Singh said while the state housing board had developed the colonies, it was never clear who was responsible for civic amenities. “We were forced to shuttle between LMC and Cantonment Board for grievance redress. Finally, we know where to go with our complaints. The LMC can no longer cite jurisdiction issues.” Arvind Vaish, another resident of the area, said they were “keeping finger crossed for better living conditions”.

LMC officials said they had already instructed private partner Eco Green to start door-to-door garbage collection in Vrindavan Yojana. Garbage compactors would be installed in the neighbourhood, they said, adding that the stray cattle menace would be contained as well.

Municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi said garbage collection and curbing cattle menace were on their priority list. “In the next phase, we will repair roads,” he added.
