Lucknow: Student loses Rs 50,000 to card cloning

LUCKNOW: A 24-year-old student lost Rs 50,000 meant to deposit her college fees from her bank account after her debit card was cloned.

The money was withdrawn in five transactions from two ATMs in Badshahnagar on Tuesday night using a cloned debit card, while the woman, Mona Singh, was in her house in Gorakhpur.

On Thursday, she lodged an FIR at PGI police station.

According to Mona, a final-year student in a private dental college on Rae Bareli Road, her father had deposited Rs 55,000 in her account in a nationalised bank last week for payment of fees.

On Wednesday, before making the payment, she checked her account balance to issue a cheque but was shocked to find Rs 50,000 deducted.

The bank informed Mona that the money was withdrawn from two ATMs in Badshahnagar in five withdrawals of Rs 10,000 each.

"I had my debit card with me at all times and never shared its detail with anyone. Since I couldn't pay the fees on time, I will have to bear Rs 500 per day as penalty till my father is able to arrange the amount," she said.

PGI SHO Ashok Kumar Saroj said, "We are taking the help of cybercell to trace the miscreant."
