Lucknow: Thieves smash car windows, break open trunk and steal cash, laptop

LUCKNOW: The city witnessed a sudden spurt in cases of car windows being smashed for stealing cash and valuables with as many as three victims, including a revenue officer, being targeted on Wednesday.


Two of the three incidents were reported near the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in Gomtinagar, pointing at a gang operating in the posh area and striking at will amid crowd.

Virendra Kumar (30), a revenue officer posted at Rudauli in Ayodhya, parked his car at the venue for Uttarakhand Mahotsav in New Hyderabad at around 5.15pm.

When he returned after 30 minutes, he found the glass on the rear left door broken and three bags kept on the back seat containing Rs 2,000 cash, clothes worth Rs 20,000, PAN card and debit card missing.

Mahanagar S-I Abhay Pratap Singh said, "Since there were no CCTV cameras at the spot, we are scanning the footage of nearby CCTV cameras on route but have not succeeded in identifying the miscreants."

Umair Ahmed, a resident of Avadh Vihar colony, told police that he went to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with his younger sister who had an appointment with a doctor, parked his car on the road along the sector office of Central Reserve Police Force and went inside. On coming back after a few hours, he found the rear window of his car broken and his sister's purse with Rs 7500 in cash, a cheque book with signed leaflets, an electronic tablet and important documents missing from the vehicle.

In the other incident, Ibadur R.H. Husami (43), a resident of Buddheshwar, had visited RML Hospital for some official work and parked his car near a bank and went to a medical store. When he returned after 10 minutes, he found the lock of his car trunk broken and his bag containing a laptop and important documents like signed cheques, debit and credit cards, Aadhar card, PAN card missing.

SHO, Vibhuti Khand, Rajeev Dwivedi said, "The miscreants seem to be members of an inter-district or inter-state gang. They have targeted vehicles parked in isolated spots. We are scanning the CCTV camera footage to identify the miscreants."
