Ludhiana: Drug accused ends life in Ropar prison

PATIALA: A 36-year-old jail inmate at Ropar Central Jail allegedly committed suicide in the jail precincts on Saturday by hanging himself with a ceiling fan. The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Singh alias Laddi of Khadur Sahib.

The jail authorities claimed that he was booked under the drugs case at Mohali phase IV police station after heroin was recovered from his custody.

The authorities revealed that Amandeep was arrested by the special task force after which he was sent to Ropar jail in September.

"The deceased was a baptized Sikh and has been doing community service at the gurdwara in the jail. He allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in the storeroom of the gurdwara. He was under depression too. On Saturday, after prayers in the gurdwara, Amandeep locked himself in the storeroom. Some other inmates were present nearby, but they did not notice. After sometime, they tried to find Amandeep and later came to know that he had locked himself. We broke open the door and he was found hanging with the help of a rope. We rushed him to the civil hospital, but he was declared brought dead by the doctors. We have written to the higher authorities and conduct a judicial inquiry into the matter," said Amrik Singh, superintendent of the Ropar jail.
