Ludhiana-Mullanpur rly line to get double track

Ludhiana: The development project of increasing the frequency of trains on the Ludhiana-Mullanpur rail route willl kick off from the first week of November as the Northern Railway Board has sanctioned the much-needed development proposal of laying double-lane tracks on the Ludhiana-Mullanpur-Ferozepur railway route to run more long-distance high-speed trains in order to cater to the rush of passengers in the future and make travelling for passengers more convenient.

The development project, which costs more than Rs 20 crore, will begin next month and will be completed within its given deadline as divisional-level engineer is supervising its entire working, the railway authorities told TOI.

The major problem faced by the railway authorities due to working of single-lane railway tracks between Mullanpur and Ludhiana was that there was a shortage of tracks for the passage of the freight as well long-route trains running on the segment.

Most of the trains running on the route run late on a regular basis because a train coming from one side has to wait at a station and give passage to another crossing train.

Giving information on the matter, Ludhiana station director Tarun Kumar said: “Northern Railway authorities have a view to increase the rush of trains on the Ludhiana-Mullanpur-Ferozepur railway route in the upcoming years. For this, the project of laying double-lane tracks has been introduced by the railways so that more trains and therefore, more passengers, can travel on the same route easily. The development work will soon kick off as the engineering department of the railways has started surveying the land for lying down of double tracks.”

Kumar further said: “There are two major developmental projects which are underway in the Ferozpur division. One is the laying of double tracks on Dhuri lane and the second one is the Ludhiana-Mullanpur railway track project. After the completion of the developmental work, the railways will initiate the process of electrification of the same route to make it suitable for an electric engine and therefore, reducing the work of diesel engine so that more high-speed trains can ply on the route.”
