Madhya Pradesh: Violence, arson mar Muharram procession in Shajapur

Shajapur: Arson and violence vitiated the atmosphere at Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh during a torch-light procession on the eve of Muharram on Monday night.

The Madhya Pradesh Police on Tuesday said that stones were pelted in the direction of the Muharram procession in the city’s Nathwada area.

Amidst the ruckus, some people set ablaze at least three two-wheelers. In order to control the angry mob, police used mild force, said Shajapur Superintendent of Police Pankaj Shrivastava. The mob also vandalised the property in the house and office of a former government prosecutor Sunil Vishwakarma.

Not much information is available regarding injuries to anybody.

The stone-pelting took place for around 20 minutes, triggering a stampede-like situation.

After the police’s action, the procession took place peacefully. The SP added that a case of arson and rioting has been filed against unidentified persons.

The probe is underway, said the SP.

In a bid to ensure that peace prevails in Shajapur, cops met various groups today. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is considered a day of bereavement.

Said to be the most important ritual of Shia Muslims, Muharram is observed in the memory of martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussain and his supporters at the battle of Karbala.

On this day, people take out processions, mourn and recall the supreme sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his followers.
