Madurai police tell residents to utilize technology to check burglary

MADURAI: City police , on Tuesday, have urged the residents to make use of technology to safeguard valuables in their houses especially when they leave the house locked and travel out of town.

Even as the house break-in incidents continue to take place in the city rampantly, residents have not learnt anything from it, said a police officer adding that the locked house monitoring system has been made available by the city police but is not being used by the people.

“Not many come forward to use the locked house monitoring system. It was launched to temporarily install CCTV cameras to monitor houses. Many of the incidents can be averted if they inform the local police before leaving,” an officer said.

There are many safety equipment including sensors to detect movement in locked houses, electronic safes and wireless home alarm system. They are affordable as they cost less than Rs 10,000, said another officer.

V Muthupandi, a resident of Teachers Colony at Anupanadi, who took efforts to bring the residential area, where he resides, under the surveillance of CCTV cameras a few years ago, said that it has helped to bring down the crime incidents in the locality. Earlier there used to be frequent snatching and burglary incidents, he added. The CCTV cameras help the police nab the suspect if there are any crime incidents, he said.

City police commissioner, S Davidson Devasirvatham said that electronic equipment to safeguard from incidents like burglary has become cheaper now. It is worthy of investment as valuables worth lakhs can be saved. These days it just takes Rs 10,000 to install CCTV camera, he said.
