Maharashtra: Jalna cop manhandles woman protester, video goes viral

AURANGABAD: A video has gone viral of a Jalna district police officer manhandling a woman protester as she was hurling slogans at the chief minister convoy during the BJP’s Maha Janadesh Yatra on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place near Rajur road, when the yatra led by CM Devendra Fadnavis was heading to Jalna as a part of its on-going tour of the state.

The woman, who was is identified as Pooja More, is also the state president of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna’s youth wing. In another clip of the incident, the same policeman was seen gagging her mouth while she was shouting “CM go back” slogans when she was taken away in a police van.

When contacted, Jalna superintendent of police S Chaitanya said, “Four people including a woman tried to obstruct the convoy, they were taken in to preventive detention.” The officer said all of them were later released, he was unaware about the woman protester being manhandled by the male cop.

Party president and former MP Raju Shetti told TOI, “The way police manhandled her is extremely shameful. We want the state women’s commission to take cognizance of the issue and initiate further action. She should have been handled by women cops on duty and not by male cop, who gagged her mouth.”

Shetti said that the protest was to declare a drought situation in Marathwada region, waiver for Kharip crops, clearing the 7/12 extracts of the loans and taking measures to curb down farmer suicides. Pooja’s family was put under preventive detention in Beed as well as Aurangabad city, after the police found out that they have plan to protest during Chief Minister’s Maha Janadesh Yatra.

The 28-year old managed to give slip to the police in these two districts and reach Jalna, catching the police by surprise. She not only shouted “CM Go Back” slogans, but also tried waving black flags to the CM convoy.

A male cop tried to stop her from waiving black flag as well as from shouting. The video caught him holding her hands, while she struggled to release from his clutches and flee.

Even her uncle Rajaram More, an NCP corporator from Vijaynagar area of the city claimed of being put under house arrest. He said that the police in an attempt to intimidate them carried out a search in their house. So much so that even some of the family members were shifted to Ahmednagar so that no one protests against the chief minister.
